Ένας σημαντικός παράγοντας στο πρόβλημα της διαφθοράς είναι η σχέση μεταξύ πολιτικής και χρήματος.
Η Transparency International, μια ΜΚΟ με έδρα στη Γερμανία, ορίζει τη διαφθορά ως τη λανθασμένη χρήση δημόσιας δύναμης και εξουσίας για την εξυπηρέτηση του ιδιωτικού συμφέροντος. Με βάση αυτό, είχε εκδόσει στο παρελθόν μια λίστα με τις πιο διεφθαρμένες του πλανήτη, υπογραμμίζοντας την αποτυχία να ελεγχθεί η διαφθορά παγκοσμίας, κάτι που οδηγεί σε κρίση δημοκρατίας.
Σύμφωνα, όμως, με την πιο πρόσφατη λίστα από το U.S. News’ 2020 Best Countries rankings, η Κολομβία φαίνεται να καταλαμβάνει την κορυφή της λίστας της διαφθοράς, ανάμεσα σε 73 χώρες και έπειτα από έρευνα σε 20 χιλιάδες πολίτες παγκοσμίως.
Ενώ η χώρα είναι γνωστή για τα πολιτικά της σκάνδαλα, οι ψηφοφόροι εξέλεξαν τον Οκτώβριο του 2019 την Κλόντια Λόπεζ, μέλος του πράσινου κόμματος της Κολομβίας και εξέχουσα ακτιβίστρια, ως δήμαρχο της Μπογκοτά. Η Λόπεζ είναι η πρώτη γυναίκα και ανοιχτά ομοφυλόφιλο άτομο που έγινε δήμαρχος της πρωτεύουσας της Κολομβίας.
