Υπάρχει τεράστια διαφοροποίηση στους κανόνες για τη διάρκεια της στρατιωτικής θητείας στις χώρες που εξακολουθούν να έχουν υποχρεωτική στράτευση, καθώς και διαφορετικοί λόγοι για εξαιρέσεις.
Ενώ οι περισσότερες χώρες στρατολογούν μόνο άνδρες, μερικές χώρες όπως η Βόρεια Κορέα, το Ισραήλ, η Νορβηγία, η Σουηδία, η Ερυθραία και η Μοζαμβίκη στρατολογούν επίσης γυναίκες.
