Κατά το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του 20ου αιώνα, οι ΗΠΑ κέρδισαν το 10% των θερινών Ολυμπιακών μεταλλίων.
Με τους Θερινούς Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του Παρισιού να βρίσκονται ήδη σε εξέλιξη,10.500 αθλητές θα διαγωνιστούν σε 329 αγώνες για δισεκατομμύρια θεατές σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Το καγιάκ και το μπρέικ (κοινώς γνωστό ως breakdancing) θα κάνουν το ντεμπούτο τους στους Αγώνες, ενώ το σερφ και το σκέιτμπορντ επιστρέφουν για δεύτερη φορά στον θεσμό.
Στην παρακάτω λίστα θα δούμε τις χώρες με τα περισσότερα μετάλλια στους θερινούς Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες, με βάση τα στοιχεία της Διεθνούς Ολυμπιακής Επιτροπής (χωρίς να υπολογίζονται αυτά που έχουν απονεμηθεί στο Παρίσι).
