Υπό το βλέμμα του Αμερικανού προέδρου, Ντόναλντ Τραμπ, οι Αμερικανοί αστροναύτες Μπομπ Μπένκεν και Νταγκ Χάρλεϊ εκτοξεύθηκαν από το Διαστημικό Κέντρο Κένεντι στην Φλόριντα επιβαίνοντες σε πύραυλο της SpaceX, της πρώτης ιδιωτικής εταιρείας στην οποία εμπιστεύθηκε η NASA μία τόσο πολύτιμη αποστολή. Η πρώτη απόπειρα εκτόξευσης την Τετάρτη είχε αναβληθεί 17 λεπτά πριν τη λήξη της αντίστροφης μέτρησης, λόγω καιρικών συνθηκών. Χθες, παρά τους φόβους που υπήρχαν η εκτόξευση πραγματοποιήθηκε κανονικά.

Μιλώντας χθες στο αμερικανικό δίκτυο CNN, ο Χάρλεϊ τόνισε: «Αντιμετωπίζουμε την πρόκληση σαν οποιαδήποτε άλλη. Το πιθανότερο είναι ότι θα συζητήσουμε και θα σκεφτούμε περισσότερα πράγματα αφού επιστρέψουμε».
Στο ερώτημα τι θα απαντούσε σε κάποιον που θα του έλεγε ότι από δοκιμαστής αεροσκαφών θα κατέληγε μέλος αυτής της ιστορικής αποστολής, ο Μπένκεν απάντησε: «Εκτιμώ ότι το πιθανότερο που θα του έλεγα είναι ότι είναι τρελός».
Η αποστολή προετοιμάζεται εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια. Θα είναι η πρώτη φορά που αστροναύτες θα ταξιδέψουν στο Διεθνή Διαστημικό Σταθμό από αμερικανικό έδαφος μετά τον τερματισμό του προγράμματος του Διαστημικού Λεωφορείου το 2011. Παράλληλα, θα είναι η πρώτη φορά από το μακρινό 1981 που αστροναύτες της NASA θα ταξιδέψουν με ένα καινούργιο μοντέλο διαστημικού οχήματος.
