epa10572353 Visitors watch the broadcast of the second launch attempt of the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Ariane 5 rocket transporting the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE), from the European spaceport in Kourou in French Guiana, at University of Bern, Switzerland, 14 April 2023. The mission's liftoff was delayed on 13 April due to weather conditions at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. The launch was rescheduled for 14 April at 14:14 CEST. Following launch, Juice embarked on an eight-year journey to Jupiter, expected to arrive in July 2031. The mission will make detailed observations of the gas giant and its three moons (Ganymede, Callisto and Europa), explore Jupiter's environment and study its wider system as an archetype for gas giants across the Universe. Flight VA 260 will be the final Ariane 5 flight to carry an ESA mission to space. EPA/ANTHONY ANEX

epa01155090 A Long March-3A carrier rocket launched the lunar satellite Chang'e-I moon probe as part of China's programme to land a rover on the moon around 2012, from the Xichang space centre in the south-western province of Sichuan, China on 24 October 2007 just after 6 pm (1000 GMT). The probe was scheduled to begin moving away from an initial orbit
around the Earth on October 31 and complete its manoeuvre into a
lunar orbit on November 5. A successful mission by the Chang'e-I would complete the first of three stages of China's planned lunar exploration programme. EPA/WU HONG

On 12 April 1961, Gagarin performed a space flight aboard the Vostok-1 spacecraft, orbiting Earth in 108 minutes and landing safely near Smelovka village in the Saratov Region's Ternovsky District, Russia.
The Soviet Union's 04 October 1957 launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite during the Cold War period (1947-91) between the United States and the USSR is regarded as the start of man's space exploration era, or the so-called 'Race to Space'. The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, an event seen as the peak of the United States’ space program of the 1960s and which put an end to the Space Race between Cold War rivals the US and the Soviet Union, that was triggered by the Sputnik launch. epa01797778 A NASA handout photo dated 20 July 1969 showing Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin standing by the US flag planted on the surface of the moon. On 20 July 2009 the world marks forty years since the first human set foot on the moon. In 1961, US President John F. Kennedy had a challenge for NASA -- to land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. The first Apollo missions were spent getting ready for the moon landing. Apollo 8 and Apollo 10 even flew all the way to the moon, around it, and back to Earth. Apollo 11 traveled to the moon and arrived in lunar orbit on 19 July 1969. EPA/NASA/HO EDITORIAL USE ONLY
