Η κίνηση του Μπάιντεν θεωρείται σε μεγάλο βαθμό συμβολική καθώς οι εισαγωγές από τη Ρωσία αποτελούσαν μόνο το 8% των συνολικών εισαγωγών αργού πετρελαίου.
Όταν στς 8 Μαρτίου, ο πρόεδρος Τζο Μπάιντεν υπέγραψε εκτελεστικό διάταγμα που απαγορεύει τις εισαγωγές ρωσικού φυσικού αερίου, άνθρακα και πετρελαίου, οι ΗΠΑ έγιναν η πρώτη χώρα, στο τρέχον κύμα εναντίον του Πούτιν, που επιβάλλει τέτοιες κυρώσεις. Και ενώ η διακοπή του εμπορίου, ειδικά για το ρωσικό φυσικό αέριο, θα μπορούσε να δημιουργήσει προβλήματα στην Ευρώπη μακροπρόθεσμα, άλλα έθνη έχουν λιγότερο να φοβηθούν όταν πρόκειται για ελλείψεις πετρελαίου.
