Yemen’s inflation rate in 2023 is expected to reach around 17.1 percent, down from 40 percent in 2022 due to a more stable exchange rate and the recent decline in global food prices, as per projections by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). War-ravaged Yemen imports almost 90 percent of its overall food supply, including over 40 percent of wheat and other grains imports coming from Ukraine and Russia. EPA/YAHYA ARHAB

Despite the fact that the European Commission (EC) approved an additional EUR 9.77 million in aid for Bulgarian grain, after having already approved EUR 16 million, there is about 30 percent more grain in warehouses than in previous years. Earlier this year, the EC decided that until 15 September, grain from Ukraine cannot be sold on the market of Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary, the Ministry of Agriculture of Bulgaria said. ODESSA, UKRAINE - JUNE 17: A man processes wheat in Odessa, Ukraine, on June 17, 2022 as Russian-Ukrainian war continues. While the Ukrainian government and several international leaders seek alternative methods to convey thousands of tons of grain stock from the "blocked" Odessa Port to European countries, Ukrainian farmers seek new ways to market the crops that remain in their warehouses. Despite the fear of attack, people in villages along the battle lines in eastern Ukraine do not leave their wheat fields while the war between Russia and Ukraine continues. Despite the challenges, individuals in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, in districts under the control of the Ukrainian government, and in settlements that have been targeted by Russian bombings, continue to work in agriculture. epa10365512 Wheat grains are being collected in sacks after being separated from the straw by a threshing machine during a harvest season at a field in Sana'a, Yemen, 14 December 2022. The World Bank has provided an additional 150 million US dollar to boost local food production and provide emergency assistance to smallholder farmers and vulnerable households in conflict-ravaged Yemen, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported. Yemen has suffered from the effects of the war in Ukraine which disrupted shipments of wheat thus further weakening the food security situation in the Arab country. Yemen’s total wheat production contributes less than 10 percent of all utilization needs due to the effects of the prolonged conflict as well as poor water management and high fuel prices. Yemen is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crisis in the world with approximately 23.4 million people out of its 30-million population depend on humanitarian assistance to survive due to eight years of devastating conflict, according to estimates by UN relief agencies. A reduction in the quantity of wheat released by government warehouses is being blamed for the price hike by flour millers. According to the former chairman of the Pakistan Footwear Manufacturer Association (PFMA) Khaleeq Arshad, Pakistan has been importing wheat from Ukraine for the past few years. However, the war in Ukraine affected the supply line, bringing the quantity of grains in the market way short of the demand for them. EPA/ARSHAD ARBAB
